We all know how frustrating it can be when someone else gets into a position we feel we deserve. To make matters worse, most of us know how it feels for that person to not deserve it at all. Nepotism is sadly a part of most companies. Most CEO’s do have family, and in an economy like this, everyone is begging for a job. After all, what uncle wouldn’t give his favorite nephew a job to live on? Even worse, what uncle would give him a terrible job? That is where the nepotism rears its ugly head.
You don’t have to be completely upset when you experience nepotism though. There are a few things that can help you deal with it, without killing the boss’s son.
Don’t Jump to Conclusions This is probably the hardest thing to accomplish. Most guys are so upset that the CEO brought in his family, that we automatically starting hating on the family member. Hating can be fun, but remember that you have to work with these people. As much as it sucks, they even have a huge influence on your growth opportunity too. If you want to make things work, then don’t jump to conclusions about this persons capabilities. While it may be hard to believe that family of the boss could possibly be smart, it happens. Not everyone is given the job just because they are family without any reason behind it. The boss isn’t going to hire someone who will lose him money, family or not. You have to give “Joe” a chance. He may seem like a spoiled brat, but you never know how talented he could be, and by keeping him close you have a little birdie to tell the boss when you are doing well. Be Understanding with Open Arms Be understanding about their position. Nepotism can have a negative effect on the favored family member too. It is not the easiest thing in the world to accept help in the corporate world for a lot of people, and “Joe” is probably facing a lot of criticism because of that help. Always give this person a chance before you pass judgment on them. They could be an awesome and intelligent co-worker, so don’t be close minded. Helping your new co-worker is a great way to gain his respect, as well as the boss’s. Make sure that the boss sees you helping out his new hire. This will likely get you on the boss’s good side and you can make a new friend while you show him the ropes. Remember, if you make the boss’s new hire look bad, than you are making the boss himself look bad. We all know it is a bad idea to make the boss look bad. If it isn’t working out If you tried getting to know the new guy and are having a hard time working with him, there are a few things you should remember. First, only pay mind to the big stuff. Petty problems aren’t worth ruining your position in the boss’s favor. Only bring attention to issues that cannot be avoided. Everything else should be left alone, just to keep things easier on you. When In Doubt, Babysit If this new co-worker is as incompetent as you originally thought, make sure you keep an eye on them. Your boss will appreciate the help, and a lot of times you can get on everyone’s good side by taking on responsibility and being a big influence. If you do this, you are more likely to move up in the company, which can have its own set of benefits. Never let your new co-worker take on too much, and if he is saddled with a big project, make sure he is staffed with enough people to make sure the project doesn’t end badly. You should remember to keep your friends close, and your enemy’s closer. Help your new co-worker make important decisions, and your influence could help you move yourself up in the company. If family likes you, the boss will grow to like you much more.
