In a world where we have to work long hours all week just to survive it is important for us to learn how to balance out our career with our personal life. There is a fine line between a person’s personal life and their career life these days. Telling the difference between the two has never been more important than it is right now.
Before you can find a balance of life and work, you have to figure out what is important to you. The reason we can’t all follow the same exact rules is because we all find different things important. No one person has the same priorities as the next. This makes it impossible for us to tell you exactly what to do with your time. What we can tell you is how to decide for yourself.
Balancing out your personal life and your work starts with good time management. By organizing your time the right way you can make sure that you don’t get too wrapped up in either one.
Managing Your Time Wisely Managing your time the right way can help you separate your work life from your personal life. You need to set aside time for each one of your priorities. By making sure everything has its own space in your schedule, you are less likely to overlap things. For example, if you have eight hours of nothing but work and you stick to it, you won’t have to bring your work home. You have to follow the schedule, and use your time the way you plan it, and those two worlds won’t collide.
Making Time for you is Important Too! Make sure that your schedule includes rest and relaxation time. If you don’t have enough time for you, you will most likely end up wasting time you set aside for work. This is a struggle because you lose focus, and that will create a lot of problems. If you like to sit around and watch TV sometimes, make sure you leave room in your schedule to do so. Likewise, if you are a golfing fan, make some time to go golfing. Coming up with a hobby is a good way to balance work and life. Having a hobby can be a structured form of you time, that has a schedule mapped out. For example, join a city sports team, art class, or fitness class that you can do a few times a week. By doing this, you are getting the perfect balance between you and work.
Have a Support System Balancing life and work can be hard, which is why you need a support system. When you are starting off in your career, you should make a point to find a mentor. This could be someone around the office or someone at another company. Either way, this is a great way to get advice on things like office politics and work routines that are successful.
Keep your friends close to you. It is so easy to lose that much needed guy-time when it comes to getting a career. Companionship is important, so even if you work a lot you should still have that one friend who you see once and a while and can talk to about anything without being judged.
Family is important too, you should make time for your girlfriend or wife and your kids if you have them. Take the time out to talk to your family and hear what they have to say too. Family can offer a really cool perspective on things, and make life much more enjoyable.
Connecting with the Outside World It is easy to get wrapped up in the whole work and you time ritual. Some people forget about one thing, other people. You need to socialize, it’s part of human life and your life can get really depressing if you don’t. Make a conscious effort to talk to your family, friends, and co-workers often.
Meeting new people is important too, not only will it help you to network for your career but it will also help you make new friends. A guy can never have too many friends by his side, just make sure you are choosing people who make your life easier not make it harder.
Make plans with your girlfriend or wife. Set actual dates and don’t break them, this structure will help make sure you don’t end up missing out and will make her feel special. Pencil in time for friends, don’t just spend time with your friend on demand or whenever you have time for them. You should always make time for people who are important to you.
Balancing It All Out
Last but not least, make sure that you listen to your body. If you get sick, or feel so tired or burned out that you feel like joining a private rehabilitation program, don’t ignore it. Always act upon how you feel, if you are feeling miserable go to a doctor; don’t put it off until you can’t anymore.
Get a lot of rest, this will help make balancing your life a lot easier, and will keep you happy and healthy. So don’t work all night or miss nights of sleep, your health is most important.
