In this economy layoffs are way too common. So common in fact, people are running for the hills with their entire life savings after losing their jobs. The unemployment rate is sky rocketing. Businesses everywhere have to lay off their workers. No one can afford to pay unnecessary employees anymore, so people everywhere are losing their jobs. Even people who have been with a company for years are losing their job, which basically shows us that no one is safe.

So when your boss says those words that you were trying so hard to avoid, “we have to let you go”, what are you supposed to do? Well, don’t worry there are ways to survive a layoff. Just because you lose your job doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, even in an economy like this.

Understanding Your Options
A lot of people go into a panic when they get laid off. It is hard for a man to find a new job as quickly as he used to. This leads to a lot of frustration, and depression. A lot of men sink into a deep depression once they get laid off; this is the hardest part to overcome.

No matter what happens, you have got to keep your head on straight and stay positive. When you first get laid off, you need to decide what your options are. Don’t spend too long on the grieving process; it will only hurt you in the end.

Take a look at your old resume and make updates. Include information from your most recent job, and ask your boss for a letter of recommendation. In most cases, a boss will lay off people only when they have you, the fact that you have been laid off and not fired means that you were doing something right. Having a letter of recommendation is a great way to show prospective employers that the layoff wasn’t because of a lack of hard work.

Look in the local newspapers and classifieds for a new job. You have to get back on your feet fast; in this economy any blank space in your resume looks bad. Even if you have to get a part time job to tide you over until you find a better one, it is worth taking the extra time to apply.

Finding a Part Time Job
Because corporate jobs and career driven jobs are usually better paying, it can be hard to find one quickly. This is why a lot of guys apply for a part time job to make some extra money while they look for a full time job that suites them. This is a great way to make sure you don’t go long without work, and to show diversity on your resume. Just make sure to keep your resume up to date.

Finding a part time job can easily be done through a walk in or even by looking in the newspaper. There are also online job search websites that can help you find something temporary.

Budgeting to Survive a Layoff
It is important that when you are laid off you have a budget. Without a primary source of income, you are going to need to spend your money wisely. You don’t know when you will find a job, so cutting out a lot of luxuries may be necessary for the time being.

Avoid things that are expensive for now. Cut out weekend trips to the clubs, eating out, and expensive clothing. Make your money work for you as long as possible and keep your bills paid. Debt will only make your situation worse, so put away the credit card for now.

Even driving long distances is a waste of money, so don’t go on those extra trips and if the store is close, walk. Gas money is a big spending factor, so cut down in every way possible.

Staying Positive
Stay positive during this time. It is hard to survive a layoff, but the only way to make it through strong is to keep your head up and wait it out. Patience and budgeting is all you need to survive a layoff.

Remember, don’t panic, prepare your resume, and get on your feet as soon as possible. Just doing those three things will help to keep your head above water.
