For your website to get traffic from search engines, your website must be displayed in the first few pages of the search engine results for your website's keywords/niche. For this to happen you should have done your homework correctly and done all the right things that please modern day search engines.
Since most of today’s traffic is generated via these search engines, pleasing the search engines becomes a very important task, probably as much important as pleasing the visitor itself. Over the years many known things about search engines have come up and making your website take into account these things is called search engine optimization. There are over a trillion websites, and its very obvious as to why one would rely on search engines to provide us with the information we require. Imagine going through 1000 pages manually of people selling shoes, before you reach someone selling socks. Search engines are here to stay. What this means is you better play with the rules of the search engine else your website will be the 1001th site in a list of sock retailers. For any advantage to your website, you need to be at the first page if not the first position. That being said, we must understand that relevance is key. One needs to get the point that, if one of your pages in your website is about flowers and the next about a movie you saw and the next about interview tips. None of the keywords (flowers, movie, and interview tips) will make your website rank high. For that reason alone you need to concentrate on what your niche is and go ahead from there. What is that search engine optimizers do then (software of people). They make all the content highly relevant. Also they get other website to link to your site (think of this as a vote). They add structure within your site. So your five posts about flowers linked together and the six movie reviews linked together still looks much better to a search engine crawler than stand alone links. Adding more content always helps. That said, there are black hat or other illegal techniques that can make your site rank high without any valuable information. But all the search engine companies are fighting against this and todays’ great technique soon becomes tomorrows history. So what can you do to make your website look good to search engines? Here are few good optimization techniques. 1. Before starting your design and content writing, see for optimizations early on, get your relevant keywords and design around that. Write your articles more focused on that keyword. Rather than writing something and filling in the keywords, which might just be a moot point. 2.Don't have one template sheet and fill your website in that. Each page should be different with respect to title, meta tags etc. Depending on the information on that page. For eg: a site about shoes or flowers should use the tags shoes on pages with information about shoes and flowers on the other. 3.Remember its the people who visit your website finally, don't center your entire website on search engines. though they might like you and will send people over, its they who decide that they want to stay (and hopefully buy something or click on ads) or leave and never come again. Give visitors good reason to come back, good valuable content helps in that. 4. Keep a list of keywords on each page, do add synonyms to the keywords as well. Make this a regular task before adding new pages. If your website sells old books, make sure you mention old as your keyword along with books. Your keyword should be placed in various places of the page, the links, tags, title, etc etc. But don’t abuse the keyword, use only if necessary. Do not go out of your way to add a keyword if there's no need for that word there. Search engines do penalize for adding the keyword too many times. Do make the page natural and remember its for the people you are making your site, not the search engine crawler. Incoming links as already mentioned count as vote to your website, if website A links to website B, then its considered as A voting for B. This means A think B is good quality and content vise. Now how do we trust A? Depends on how many people voted for A. If A is trustworthy (high page rank) then a vote from A is much more important than a vote from C who has a lower page rank. That being said, if A is a website about beds and C is one with flowers, and your website is about bouquets. The vote from C might be more valuable than that from A. So make sure you get good number of inbound links from sites related to yours. The relevance i stress out is very very important, the spiders check this almost on a daily basis. so you might want to concentrate on one thing. for eg how this website concentrates just on search engine optimization. (see how i added the keyword in a flowing sentence). It would look really bad to the robots if tomorrow I had a post here about a trip to Vegas. Keep content relevant. Robots don’t have eyes to see an image, so do not put any content on unreadable format like images. your visitors can read flash and images, but the crawlers can not. keep it plain, keep it simple. concentrate on good content for the reader, the rest will fall into place.
