People put a lot of time and research into finding the right stocks. However, most of the information that people use never seems to lead them the right way in relation to when they should sell the stocks. This applies especially for those that are just getting into the stock market. If the person chose their stocks carefully, then they should not have to worry about selling their stocks up until the time of retirement. In some cases however, specific situation will call for you to sell your stocks before reaching the goals that you had set financially.

In some instances, your stockbroker may advise you to sell, at the time when the stock market is about to fall in value, or this is something that you may see as the right thing to do. Although it may seem the right thing to do at the time, it does not always mean that it is. This has to do with the idea that stocks tend to fluctuate all the time. They rely heavily on the state of the economy, which in effect depends on the state of the stock market.

This is what makes determining whether you should sell the stocks that you have, so hard. The stocks may go down at one point, but then go back up as well. Therefore, you should do research and have an idea of how stable the company is before you invest.

Keep in mind that any new CEO has the ability to affect the state of a companies stock. They can potentially bring the value of the stock up or down. Any large drop in an industry has the potential to affect stocks as well. A mixture of various different thing has the ability to change the value of a stock, however there is really only three good reasons to sell a stock.

One of the first reasons to sell a stock is that you have reached the financial goals that you have set for yourself. When you reach the age of retirement, it may be a good idea to sell the stocks that you have and invest your money in other areas that are safer, such as an interest bearing savings account.

Many who invest their money for retirement, often sell when they retire and put their money in a safer place. Another reason you would want to sell a stock, is when there are major changes in the company that you invested in, which has the potential to make the value of the stock drop, with little chance for recovery. In this kind of situation, you would want to sell the stock before the value of the stock started to drop.

As for the third reason to sell, a good time is when a stock drastically increases. For example, if you were to have a stock that was worth $100 per share and then it rose up to $200 per share, within two weeks time, that would be a good time to sell. This especially applies when it looks as if the stock will return to the original $100 a share that it was.

When you first begin your venture within the stock market, it is a good idea to consult with a broker or financial advisor before you commit to buying or selling any stocks. They will work with you in order to help with making the right decisions that will help lead towards reaching the financial goals you have set.
